The sketchbook includes pencil and watercolour sketches, generally of English landscapes and buildings, also several rough survey drawings. (Safe 3) Also at MS 8349 are 3 letters from the Public library Chief Librarian, Mr Armstrong to Mrs McDonald (1916) and Mrs Hoddle-Wrigley (1908) re Robert Hoddle diary (975/2(c)) and a letter from Maria Sage to her niece Mrs McDonald listing the birthdates of some of her own and the Hoddle family. "Enrutha", Baxter, Victoria October 31st 1923. (975/2(d)).

Robert Hoddle arrived in New South Wales in 1823 and worked with J. Oxley in Queensland and the Blue Mountains. In 1837 he was appointed senior surveyor at Port Phillip and designed Melbourne, Geelong, Williamstown and many other Victorian settlements. George Baxter Pritchard was head of the school of mines at the Working Men's College (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) 1897-1934.
